Romanians eager to go on holiday after two years of restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic can choose these days from the offers that the operators and tourism agencies are making available on the occasion of Romania’s Tourism Fair (TTR).

Romania’s Tourism Fair will make a comeback this year with the famous 1 Euro vacation and many other offers from all around the world, some at a few thousand Euros.

Summer vacation season, charter flights, and circuits via plane or bus are discounted to up to 40%, on the occasion of the online tourism fair organized by Paralela 45, between February 24-27, according to AGERPRES.

Through its tourism agencies, Christian Tour has prepared special offers for the acquisition of vacations in the style of Early Booking, with discounts to up to 60%, in already famous destinations for Romanians: Greece, Turkey, Spain, Bulgaria or Romania, for the summer festival. Easter vacations in Romania, Turkey, and Hungary, and several stays via bus or plane in Greece, Turkey, or Egypt, organized by Hello Holidays, have price discounts of almost 50% throughout the tourism fair.

Seaside vacations for the summer of 2022 can be purchased on February 23-27 with discounts up to 60% within the online Tourism fair organized by Litoralulromanesc.ro, the largest tour operator on the segment of vacations at the Black Sea, event in which over 230 accommodation units are participating, from all local domestic resorts. Under the name „Virtual Stand of DAL Travel Agency,” the Romanian tour operator promotes special offers for circuits and exotic destinations, with discounts to up to 150 Euro per person.

Throughout the tourism fair, IRI Travel, the main tour operator specialized in both the Bulgarian seaside as well as the Romanian one, proposes offers with special discounts to up to 35% on the Bulgarian coast and up to 10% for the Romanian seaside, beyond the threshold of early booking.

Bibi Touring operator announces that during the duration of Romania’s Tourism Fair, it will offer discounts to up to 35% for seaside vacations, in the mountainside, spa resorts, in the Danube Delta.

The Karpaten Tourism agency prepared the spring edition for Romania’s Tourism Fair. New destinations await visitors, with discounts up to 45% for tourist packages at the Romexpo stand, which recreates the atmosphere for a vacation.

Dertour prepared offers for all TTR visitors, from 299 Euro per person, for seven nights, all-inclusive, flight included, and any acquisition of a package that automatically subscribes them to a raffle for two vacations.

Romania’s Tourism Fair is taking place between February 24-27, 2022, at Romexpo. This is the first in-person edition since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Foreign visitors to Romania in 2021 contributed more than EUR 400 million to the country’s tourism industry.
According to the NIS (National Institute of Statistics), 837,7 thousand non-resident tourists visiting Romania in 2021 will spend an average of EUR 480 per person. The number of tourists visiting Romania in 2021 increased by 90% over the previous year. However, not all foreign tourists came to Romania for the sole purpose of sightseeing. What is the forecast for business and leisure travel in Romania in 2021? 

Non-resident tourists arriving in Romania in the fourth quarter of 2021 spent 56.9% of their total expenses on business objectives, such as attending conventions, seminars, courses, fairs, and exhibitions.
The main share of overall business expenditures in the fourth quarter of 2021 (46.1%) represents accommodation expenses, with this sort of expense being favoured, particularly hotels with breakfast included (89.6 % of total accommodation expenses). Non-resident tourist expenditures in restaurants and bars accounted for 17.9% of total business expenditures, while those for shopping accounted for 18.9%. Food and drink accounted for 41.9 % of overall retail expenses, while apparel and footwear accounted for 29.2%.

In 2021, 46.9% of non-resident tourists arriving in Romania did so for a specific reason. Their outgoings account for 44.3% of their total costs. In the fourth quarter of 2021, 81.9% of tourists arrived in Romania by plane, while 14.9% arrived by car, 2.8% by coaches and buses, and 0.4% arrived by other methods of transportation (train, riverboats, rented vehicles, motorcycles, etc.).

Since official figures in 2020 claimed that Bucharest was no longer Romania’s most visited city, the Romanian capital remained in the same position in 2021, according to Visit Bucharest. Bucharest topped the list in 2019 with about 2 million tourists, both locals and visitors from other countries, but it now appears that the pandemic was the main cause of the fall.

In terms of foreign tourist arrivals in Bucharest in 2021, the Romanian capital will not be able to accommodate a large number of visitors. In 2021, the statistics stayed the same as in 2020, when Bucharest was rated third on the most visited Romanian cities behind Constanta and Brasov.

We woke reasonably late following the feast and free flowing wine the night before. After gathering ourselves and our packs, we headed down to our homestay family’s small dining room for breakfast, where we enjoyed scrambled eggs, toast, mekitsi (fried dough), local jam and peppermint tea.

 We were making our way to the Rila Mountains, where we were visiting the Rila Monastery.

We wandered the site with busloads of other tourists, yet strangely the place did not seem crowded. I’m not sure if it was the sheer size of the place, or whether the masses congregated in one area and didn’t venture far from the main church, but I didn’t feel overwhelmed by tourists in the monastery.

Headed over Lions Bridge and made our way to the Sofia Synagogue, then sheltered in the Central Market Hall until the recurrent (but short-lived) mid-afternoon rain passed.

Feeling refreshed after an espresso, we walked a short distance to the small but welcoming Banya Bashi Mosque, then descended into the ancient Serdica complex.

We were exhausted after a long day of travel, so we headed back to the hotel and crashed. I had low expectations about Sofia as a city, but after the walking tour I absolutely loved the place. This was an easy city to navigate, and it was a beautiful city – despite its ugly, staunch and stolid communist-built surrounds. Sofia has a very average facade as you enter the city, but once you lose yourself in the old town area, everything changes.
