Constantin Brancusi National Day: February 19

0

The main thing that you have to remember on this journey is just to be nice to everyone and always smile. Refreshingly, what was expected of her was the same thing that was expected of Lara Stone: to take a beautiful picture.

The most famous Romanian sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, is observed annually on February 19. This was the day when Brancusi was born. In 2022 there are 146 years since his birthday and Constantin Brancusi Day is here to remind art lovers worldwide of his exceptional talent and mastership.

Constantin Brancusi is considered the pioneer of modern sculpture and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His works, among which some very famous and expensive ones, such as Infinity Columns, Mademoiselle Pogany or The Bird in Space, The Cock or The Wisdom of the Earth, created a unique style, forever loved by the sculpture enthusiasts.

Romania is his country of origin, but he was later “adopted” by France. At the age of 27, Brancusi was forced to walk from Romania to Paris as the lack of money made the journey impossible by modern means.

”When I left, you were poor and stupid. I come back and I find you poorer and more stupid!”

Constantin Brancusi when returning from France

Unfortunately, there are only a few events organized in Romania to remind the people about the marvellous sculptor’s vast personality and exceptional achievements. The most interesting one is launching the virtual tour dedicated to Brancusi.

You can enjoy it by accessing the National Museum of Art of Romania’s webpage.

Whether you are an art lover or not, you can enjoy some of the most appreciated pieces of the Constantin Brancusi collection exhibited in a museum in Romania.

How Romania Could Be Affected by EU Sanctions against Russia

Following the military actions in Eastern Ukraine, the European Commission will decide on Thursday evening, February 24, the sanctions against Russia.

According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the new sanctions proposed by the European Union against Russia will target vital sectors and prevent Russian banks from accessing European financial markets. “Russia will experience unprecedented isolation,” warns EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell.

”Through this (sanctions) package, we will target strategic sectors of the Russian economy by blocking access to key technologies and markets. We will weaken Russia’s economic base and its ability to modernize.”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commision

How Romania will be affected by any economic sanctions against Russia

The measures the European Commission and the international community are about to take against Russia will certainly affect Romania as well. It’s a matter of economic trade with Russia and a matter of the investors’ trust in investing in the region.

The measures about to be taken today or in the following days will probably focus mainly on the banking sector and other sectors, including, as rumor has it, the gas sector. This means that Europe could decide to give up on gas imports from Russia, but, as a consequence, hundreds of millions of Europeans could suffer. Apart from that, the gas and energy prices, already at the highest level, could grow even more.

According to recent statistics, Romania has a trade deficit of more than 1.6 billion EUR with Russia. Romanian imports from Russia grew by more than 33% last year, while the exports grew by only 2%. In other words, Romania imports more from Russia than it exports to Russia. This shows a specific economic dependency, but the products imported from Russia could be purchased from other countries or regions at negotiated costs.

Most of the goods imported are oil, gas, and related products, while Romania exports engine parts or industrial equipment.

At first sight, Romania isn’t one of the most affected countries in the European Union, even though it imports gas from the Russian Federation. The gas reserves that Romania has could compensate in the short term for any sanctions regarding gas imports, for example. But in the long run, Romania and other European countries would have to find another supplier if they are looking to get the economic dependency from this perspective.

Still, any military conflict near its borders will affect Romania and the intention of the investors to pour their money into this region. This came in a context when foreign investors had already avoided Romania. According to statistics published by EUROSTAT, personal remittances of Romanians working abroad exceeded the direct foreign investments in Romania. With the military conflict near its borders, Romania is close to the worst-case scenario, when investors would avoid the country even more. This could hit the country even more than any economic sanctions imposed by the European Commission or the international community.

Americans support removing Romanians’ visa restrictions

More than half of Americans support abolishing visa requirements for Romanian nationals travelling to the United States, according to a study conducted in the United States by The Bullfinch Group in partnership with Romania’s INSCOP Research.

Despite Romania’s status as a US ally, the subject of visa cancellation has received insufficient attention. Romania, along with Bulgaria, Croatia, and Cyprus, has been removed from the Visa Waiver Program, which permits nationals of other EU nations to enter the United States without a visa.

Findings of the poll: 53% of Americans want Romania to be included in the Visa Waiver Program

When asked whether they support or oppose adding Romania to the Visa Waiver Program, which presently permits citizens of 40 countries to visit the US without a visa for 90 days or less, the majority of Americans (53 %) said they support removing Romanian citizens from the program. Only 21% of respondents are in favour of removing visas, while 25% are undecided.

In terms of political options, Democratic voters are the most in favour of removing visa requirements for Romanians. As a consequence, 57% of Democratic Party voters support Romania entering the Visa Waiver Program, while 15% are opposed and 28% are undecided.

Half of Republican Party voters (50 %) support the removal of visas for Romanian people, while 29% oppose it and 21% are undecided.

Independent voters support the removal of visas for Romanians in the same proportion as the general population. As a result, 54% of independent voters support Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program, while 21% oppose it and 25% are undecided.

Our data clearly shows that Americans have a very positive opinion of allied countries that support US policies around the world and that Americans do not perceive Romania as a source of illegal immigration. That is why most Americans support the inclusion of Romania in the Visa Waiver Program; the percentage of those who oppose it is significantly lower. It is also very relevant that there is absolutely no category of the population that we tested in the US in which the percentage of those who oppose the abolition of visas for Romanian citizens is higher than the percentage of those who support the abolition of visas.

Brett Lloyd, president and CEO of The Bullfinch Group

According to Remus Stefureac, head of Strategic Thinking Group, the information could help Romania access the Visa Waiver Program.

Remus Stefureac, head of Strategic Thinking Group
Remus Stefureac, head of Strategic Thinking Group

Data show very clearly that the share of the US population, registered voters from all political quarters (Democrats, Republicans or independents) who support the abolition of visas for Romanian citizens is more than double the share of those who oppose it. The findings may further contribute to the efforts to persuade members of the US Congress and the US administration to include Romania, one of America’s most reliable allies, in the Visa Waiver program.

Remus Stefureac, head of Strategic Thinking Group

In collaboration with INSCOP Research, the Bullfinch Group performed a national opinion poll in the United States as part of a research project sponsored by the think tank STRATEGIC Thinking Group. Phone interviews were used to collect data from February 19th to 23rd, 2022.

Romania is a US ally that supports US policies worldwide, and it has been a strategic politico-military partner since 1997. The fact that Washington does not offer all EU member nations visa-free travel on its territory remains an unresolved issue, to the prejudice of Romanians and other countries, including Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus. As a result, the idea of visa reciprocity between the EU and the United States is not fully implemented.

Expulsion of Russian Diplomats from Romania

Ten Russian diplomats have been expelled from Romania. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published an official press statement confirming the formal announcement on Tuesday, April 5. This happened just hours after Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca informed a journalist that Romania had no plans to expel any Russian ambassadors because no such cases were recorded on Romanian soil.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ten employees serving in the Russian Federation’s Embassy in Bucharest have been designated persona non grata on Romanian soil because of their activities and behaviours that violate the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

At the request of Minister Bogdan Aurescu, the Russian Federation’s Ambassador in Bucharest, and Mr Valery Kuzmin, Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs, these data were conveyed to the Russian side during a meeting conducted at the MFA headquarters on Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

The MFA reaffirmed its categorical condemnation of Russia’s role in the crimes committed in Bucea and other Ukrainian cities.

Romania has joined the list of nations that have expelled Russian ambassadors, including Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Lithuania, and others.

Romania and Russia’s political relationship is poorer due to the Ukrainian-Russian conflict. In a sign of solidarity, Romania has expelled ten Russian diplomats after, on April 4, the Ukrainian President gave a speech in the Romanian Parliament on the importance of hardening the sanctions against Russia. As the war progresses, official relations between Russia and Europe will deteriorate, so it is impossible to say precisely how this will affect foreign policy and beyond. Still, these sanctions will inevitably have consequences.

Romania Gain EUR 400 Million From Turism in 2021

0

Foreign visitors to Romania in 2021 contributed more than EUR 400 million to the country’s tourism industry.
According to the NIS (National Institute of Statistics), 837,7 thousand non-resident tourists visiting Romania in 2021 will spend an average of EUR 480 per person. The number of tourists visiting Romania in 2021 increased by 90% over the previous year. However, not all foreign tourists came to Romania for the sole purpose of sightseeing. What is the forecast for business and leisure travel in Romania in 2021?

Romanian capital
Bucharest, Romanian capital

Non-resident tourists arriving in Romania in the fourth quarter of 2021 spent 56.9% of their total expenses on business objectives, such as attending conventions, seminars, courses, fairs, and exhibitions.
The main share of overall business expenditures in the fourth quarter of 2021 (46.1%) represents accommodation expenses, with this sort of expense being favoured, particularly hotels with breakfast included (89.6 % of total accommodation expenses). Non-resident tourist expenditures in restaurants and bars accounted for 17.9% of total business expenditures, while those for shopping accounted for 18.9%. Food and drink accounted for 41.9 % of overall retail expenses, while apparel and footwear accounted for 29.2%.

visit Bucharest
Visit Bucharest Today

In 2021, 46.9% of non-resident tourists arriving in Romania did so for a specific reason. Their outgoings account for 44.3% of their total costs. Holidays, shopping, cultural and sporting events, visiting friends and family, medical treatment, religious pilgrimage, transit, and other activities are all examples of travel with a specific purpose.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, 81.9% of tourists arrived in Romania by plane, while 14.9% arrived by car, 2.8% by coaches and buses, and 0.4% arrived by other methods of transportation (train, riverboats, rented vehicles, motorcycles, etc.).

Since official figures in 2020 claimed that Bucharest was no longer Romania’s most visited city, the Romanian capital remained in the same position in 2021, according to Visit Bucharest. Bucharest topped the list in 2019 with about 2 million tourists, both locals and visitors from other countries, but it now appears that the pandemic was the main cause of the fall.

In terms of foreign tourist arrivals in Bucharest in 2021, the Romanian capital will not be able to accommodate a large number of visitors. In 2021, the statistics stayed the same as in 2020, when Bucharest was rated third on the most visited Romanian cities behind Constanta and Brasov.

Bucharest is Romania’s most visited city because it offers the best hotel infrastructure, attracting millions of visitors each year, the majority of them are here on business. In 2021, little over 900,000 tourists stayed in Bucharest’s lodging units.
Despite the fact that Romania is in the midst of a crisis as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, we expect that tourism will be unaffected in 2022, even if there hasn’t been a major drop yet.

The main thing that you have to remember on this journey is just be nice to everyone and always smile. Refreshingly, what was expected of her was the same thing that was expected of Lara Stone: to take a beautiful picture.

We woke reasonably late following the feast and free flowing wine the night before. After gathering ourselves and our packs, we headed down to our homestay family’s small dining room for breakfast, where we enjoyed scrambled eggs, toast, mekitsi (fried dough), local jam and peppermint tea.

We were making our way to the Rila Mountains, where we were visiting the Rila Monastery.

March for our Lives 2020
March for our Lives 2020

We wandered the site with busloads of other tourists, yet strangely the place did not seem crowded. I’m not sure if it was the sheer size of the place, or whether the masses congregated in one area and didn’t venture far from the main church, but I didn’t feel overwhelmed by tourists in the monastery.

City Guide for Vienna
City Guide for Vienna

Headed over Lions Bridge and made our way to the Sofia Synagogue, then sheltered in the Central Market Hall until the recurrent (but short-lived) mid-afternoon rain passed.

Feeling refreshed after an espresso, we walked a short distance to the small but welcoming Banya Bashi Mosque, then descended into the ancient Serdica complex.

We were exhausted after a long day of travel, so we headed back to the hotel and crashed. I had low expectations about Sofia as a city, but after the walking tour I absolutely loved the place. This was an easy city to navigate, and it was a beautiful city – despite its ugly, staunch and stolid communist-built surrounds. Sofia has a very average facade as you enter the city, but once you lose yourself in the old town area, everything changes.
