In a shocking turn, valuable Dacian artefacts were stolen from the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, during a daring robbery early on January 25, 2025. The theft occurred just days before the closing of the exhibition „Dacia – Kingdom of Gold and Silver,” which celebrated the rich heritage of Romania’s ancient Dacian civilization.

Details of the Robbery

The incident unfolded around 3:45 AM when thieves detonated an explosive device to breach the museum’s security. Among the stolen treasures were three gold bracelets and the exhibition’s centrepiece, the golden Helmet of Coțofenești, an artefact dating back to approximately 450 BC. This helmet was a highlight of the exhibition and a significant symbol of Romania’s cultural legacy. Museum officials expressed their profound shock and sadness over the incident, noting that such a significant theft had never occurred in their 170-year history. Although security measures were implemented for the exhibition, no guard was stationed directly in the exhibit hall during the break-in, raising questions about security protocols.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are treating this incident as a carefully orchestrated operation. Dutch police are currently investigating a suspicious vehicle linked to a car fire reported shortly after the explosion. They are appealing to local residents for any information or video footage to help identify the suspects in this audacious crime.

The Dutch police have enlisted Interpol’s assistance to track the stolen artefacts and apprehend those responsible for this brazen act. Experts have noted that such thefts are becoming increasingly common in the Netherlands, mainly targeting gold artefacts for their high material value.

Cultural Impact

The theft is not just a loss for the Drents Museum but a significant blow to Romania’s cultural heritage. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been notified and works closely with Dutch authorities to recover these irreplaceable pieces. The incident has raised alarms among cultural institutions regarding the safety and security of their collections, prompting discussions on enhancing protective measures across museums.

As investigations continue, Romanian and Dutch officials remain committed to recovering these invaluable artefacts and ensuring that such incidents do not undermine efforts to preserve cultural heritage for future generations. The theft serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges museums face in safeguarding their collections against increasingly sophisticated criminal activities.

Three prehistoric gold bracelets stolen from archaeological sites in Romania were brought to the country from Belgium on Tuesday, February 20, Visit Bucharest reports.

Two of them were identified when offered for sale at a public auction in the Principality of Monaco. The third bracelet was identified during the home search of the residence in Belgium of the person who submitted the two bracelets to the auction house in Monte Carlo with a view to public sale.

To make it possible to return the bracelets to Romania, it was necessary for the Flemish Regional Ministry – the Department of Culture to initiate a declassification procedure (the bracelets being protected by Flemish law as precious artifacts, being entered on a list of heritage assets)

The phenomenon of prehistoric and Dacian bracelets of the prehistoric and ancient civilizations once living in Romanian territory is already famous. High-value objects are found abroad and brought to the country.

Dacian gold, famous since the time of the Roman Empire, continues to generate international attention, and the artifacts stolen from the Romanian archeological sites will continue, hopefully, to be brought to the country as soon as possible.

When writing this article, the bracelets are not on display inside the National History Museum, but its administration will undoubtedly do so when possible. Until then, you can admire in the permanent exhibitions other objects with immense historical value for what the cultural heritage of the Romanian people means.

Romanian Adrian Stoica wins America Got Talent – AGT 2023. He also won USD 1 million in prizes, Valahia News reports.

Adrian Stoica performed the same act he did in Romania Got Talent. He came with his border collie named Hurricane, and the dog did most of the magic. The show is incredible, and for those of you who haven’t seen it already, here’s the whole act.

Adrian Stoica and Hurricane in the AGT 2023 Finals

Adrian Stoica even involved Sofia Vergara, one of the judges, in the act, as he invited her on stage, which impressed her. The other judges were also impressed, congratulating Andrei for his dog act.

We see many people come up and show us a dog act but rarely see a dog come up and show us a man act.
Howie Mandel, AGT 2023 judge

Also, Heidi Klum praised Hurricane.

Hurricane is the smartest dog I’ve ever seen, the whole thing was adorable. Thank you so much, you were so amazing this season!
Heidi Klum, AGT 2023 judge

And Simon talked business when he mentioned that Hurricane is better than any other dogs in the movies and that she should be in the movies.

It was like the dog was acting and performing. We watched Beverly Hills Chihuahua last night and Hurricane is better than any of the dogs in that movie, so she should be in the movie or a musical because she’s a star.
Simon Cowell, AGT 2023 judge

Here is the moment when the host announced the winner:

AGT 2023 Finals – Winner Announcement

The winner of the AGT 2023 was somehow unexpected to some and came as a surprise, but all agreed that the dog acted and performed like an actor, not a trained dog.

Adrian Stoica performed in Romania Got Talent one year ago but didn’t impress the audience or make it to the finals.

The „Picasso Effect” Exhibition can be visited between September 27, 2023, and January 8, 2024, at MARe/Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest. 46 works (paintings, drawings, engravings) signed by Pablo Picasso are placed face to face with 65 works (paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, graffiti) signed by 37 contemporary Romanian artists, influenced by the work of the most important figure of modern art, Visit Bucharest announces.

Among the Romanian artists exhibited are Ion Grigorescu, Mircea Cantor, Ștefan Bertalan, Alma Redlinger, Neculai Păduraru, Vasile Gorduz, Florin Mitroi, Victor Man, Silvia Radu, Dumitru Gorzo.
The 46 works wandered along beaten paths, from the Musée National Picasso-Paris to Bucharest, for three days and three nights – like a noble wedding.

In the year that marks half a century since Picasso’s physical disappearance, eight countries worldwide, including Romania, celebrate this anniversary through thematic exhibitions. Romania does this at MARe – Museum of Recent Art. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased on the mare.ro website.

The „Picasso Effect” is one of the most impressive exhibitions in Eastern Europe and certainly the most important in Romania – among the eight countries participating in the Célébration Picasso: 1973-2023 program.

The event is organized in partnership with the Musée National Picasso-Paris. It celebrates 50 years since the death of Pablo Picasso through a program that includes 42 other museums worldwide. Romania is the only country in Central and Eastern Europe included in the large project launched by France and Spain.

Romanians believe their quality of life has declined since the communist era. This is the unexpected outcome of a survey conducted by the INSCOP research institution.

The findings were released one month before the symbolic „Romanian Revolution” anniversary of December 1989.

57% of Romanians feel their quality of life has declined since the communist era

The research is a component of the „Romania Agenda 2050” initiative, which aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the nation’s future course. Universities, other thinking groups, and research organizations are some of the project’s collaborators, including Bucharest University and „Babes Bolyai” University of Cluj.

What’s more alarming is that the poll, done in May–June and September–October at two distinct times, reveals that Romanians believe the country’s condition is worsening. Only 54% of those surveyed in May believed that conditions were better under communism than they were now, however, by September, this percentage had risen to 57%.

Currently, 57% of the populace believes that the nation is worse off than before the so-called „Romanian Revolution” of 1989, when Nicolae Ceausescu, the Secretary General of the Romanian Communist Party, was detained and murdered.

Romania appeared different 33 years after that incident, but Romanians had bigger aspirations than that.

”Those of the mature generation are disappointed by the gap between their expectations in 1989 and what has happened. On the other hand, there are young people who don’t know much about what was before 1989, about what society was like. For example, no one thinks that almost everything was deprived from Romanians in 1989, no freedom of movement, standard of living extremely low, No basic things, such as permanent access to electricity, fuel or food”
Marin Preda, Bucharest University rector

Does anybody ponder why Romanians are unsatisfied with their lives now?

How history keeps repeating itself is amusing because political bodies don’t offer the transparency needed by the poeple to trust and support its vision and actions. In 1989, Romanians struggled to get food and endured harsh living conditions in their dwellings since neither the heating nor the power was continuously on. The communist government conserved money to pay off the foreign debt, and as a result, Romania eventually became one of the few nations without an external debt.

On the other hand, Romanians in 2022 enjoy plenty of food, whilst inflation is eroding their buying power. Since the heating system failed in numerous cities, including Bucharest, some apartments are still unheated. Mayors come and go, making empty promises to improve the situation. Although there are very few technical shortages and energy is always on, as winter nears, Romanians are worried about their electrical costs.

Is communism a superior system to democracy? Although we have our doubts, it is certain that once communism crumbled in Romania, expectations were great and have not yet been satisfied. From this viewpoint, the present energy crisis, the proximity of the war in Ukraine, and the way other members of the „European family” approach Romania will not be encouraging.

Zorila School was founded by Lavinia Goste and Marius Zorila artists two years ago in 2020 and is the first educational school of this kind in Romania. Zorila offers vocal and instrumental music lessons to kids aged 6 to 18 using innovative and interactive instructional techniques.

The founder position the school as the spot where the present meets tradition in beautifully soul-filled forms through the help of popular music. The vision is to cultivate past treasures and capitalize on them.

”Through a modern and interactive approach, we bring folklore to the heart of the young generation. We cultivate customs and traditions and equip young people with the cultural heritage represented by Romanian folklore.”
Lavinia Goste, Zorila School co-Founder

The artists that represent the group of founders and teachers of the school have as an objective that every four years to form a new generation of artists, namely instrumentalist artists, specialists of highly professional attire, who can interpret Romanian music from all ethnofolkloric areas of Romania but also know and can interpret the music of other peoples. All vocal and instrumentalist artists should be able to work in the ensembles and orchestras of popular music in Romania after completing the schools’ courses and specific training.

Source: Zorila School Official

Moreover, Zorila School doesn’t just offer courses to grow the potential connection to the folklore world in the youth, form and educate them, and have classes for talented children, but it also offers vocational classes, together with instruction courses and sessions for singers and instrumentalists already part of bands and orchestras and already established in the music scene.

As such, ARCUB partnered up with Zorila School to organize registrations for a new series of traditional vocal-interpretation courses, which will take place between October 2022 to June 2023 at Eliad House on Mircea Voda 5 Street.

The new registration can be made via email or phone. Look at the school’s official Facebook page and website to find out more information.
