While European heavyweights such as French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stood shoulder to shoulder with Moldovan President Maia Sandu to celebrate Moldova’s 34th Independence Day, Romania’s president, Nicușor Dan, was conspicuously absent. His decision to skip the August 27 ceremony in Chișinău and delay his visit until Romanian Language Day on August 31 has sparked harsh criticism and concerns over Romania’s diminishing influence in a critical neighboring country.

Moldova’s Independence Day is not just a celebration of national sovereignty but a vital moment of reaffirming European solidarity and support for democratic values in a region vulnerable to geopolitical pressures. By missing this key event, Nicușor Dan missed an irreplaceable opportunity to stand with European leaders in showcasing Romania’s commitment to Moldova’s European integration and democratic future.

Critics argue that this absence signals a troubling disconnection from Romania’s strategic role in the region. At a time when Moldova is preparing for pivotal parliamentary elections and facing constant external threats, especially from Russian influence, Romania’s leadership must be visibly present and assertive. Instead, Dan’s choice to postpone his visit has been interpreted as a sign that Romania is losing grip on its historic and political interests in Moldova.

This absence follows a pattern of missed opportunities by Dan, with previous criticisms over his failure to attend key national events such as the Romanian Navy Day, further fueling concerns over his priorities and effectiveness as the country’s commander-in-chief.

The diplomatic stage in Chișinău on August 27 was a powerful tableau of European unity, with Macron, Merz, and Tusk delivering speeches in support of Moldova’s sovereignty and democratic progress. Nicușor Dan’s delay has diminished Romania’s voice in these critical regional conversations and diplomacy.

As the situation in Eastern Europe remains volatile and Moldova’s success as a democratic state hangs in the balance, Romania cannot afford to cede ground. The message sent by Nicușor Dan’s absence is one that risks weakening Romania’s credibility and influence precisely when steadfast leadership is most needed.

Romania’s interests in Moldova are not merely symbolic; they carry significant geopolitical weight. Leadership that fails to capitalize on high-profile moments like Independence Day risks allowing other powers to fill the void.

The largest electrical energy storage capacity in batteries in Romania and the 5th in the EU, part of the first hybrid photovoltaic-wind-battery project, installed within an operational wind farm of 50 MW, has just been inaugurated with the significant contribution of PRIME Batteries.

The storage unit has an installed power of 24 MWh – (6MWx4h), is built by Monsson through a unique, patent-pending project, and uses batteries produced by Prime Batteries, Valahia News reports.

The transition to renewable energy must be achieved sustainably. Intermittentness was a problem that needed to be addressed and resolved, as far as possible, at the source generating it. Here, Prime Batteries has assumed the role of solution provider since 2016. We are identified as a battery manufacturer in the market, but our main business is the supply of lithium-ion battery storage solutions. We found a synergy with Monsson because their experience in the renewable energy industry led to projects like the one in Mireasa Park.
Vicentiu Ciobanu, PRIME’s CEO

This first stage is only one of the three stages that will constitute 216 MWh, and storage capacity will be put into operation this year in the same place. The concept is modular and suitable for high-capacity storage solutions, and it uses the latest monitoring and safety technologies for this type of product. The Monsson team created the monitoring and control software usable for storage systems and energy trading. The Monsson solution uses domestic batteries produced by the Romanian company Prime Batteries Technology. The storage unit will be charged with energy produced by the existing 50 MW Wind Farm in operation, with photovoltaic energy produced by the 35 MW Galbiori 2 Photovoltaic Park under construction which will be connected to the grid in 2024, as well as from the national grid, when there is no wind or sun. The control of the hybrid project is fully automatic, remotely, without local operational staff and will work in an integrated system through the proprietary software developed by Monsson.

The investment is made from its sources and was initiated to reduce the volatility of renewable energy production from its portfolio and as an aid to balancing SEN. Thus, the storage unit will ultimately help increase the penetration of renewable energies in Romania and reduce energy costs for end consumers by testing battery functionality to demonstrate the immediate benefits of storage facilities attached to renewable energy production sources. We want to promote such solutions both in Romania and everywhere in Europe,
Sebastian Enache, a member of the Monsson board.

In a landmark move that underscores Romania’s commitment to renewable energy and technological innovation, the inauguration of the largest electrical energy storage capacity in batteries marks a significant milestone. The project, a collaborative endeavour between PRIME Batteries and Monsson, showcases the formidable synergy between experienced renewable energy players and heralds a new era of energy storage solutions in Romania. With an installed capacity of 24 MWh, this initiative is pivotal in addressing the intermittency challenges inherent in renewable energy sources, thereby enhancing the reliability and sustainability of green energy across the nation.

This inaugural phase, the first of three aiming to achieve a total storage capacity of 216 MWh, represents a forward-thinking approach to energy management and a strategic investment in the future of renewable energy in Romania and potentially across Europe. The project’s innovative use of lithium-ion battery storage solutions and cutting-edge monitoring and safety technologies sets a new standard in the industry. It demonstrates a significant leap toward reducing renewable energy production volatility and increasing energy accessibility and affordability for end consumers.

As PRIME Batteries and Monsson expand their footprint in the renewable energy sector, their efforts could increase renewable energy penetration in Romania as a model for Europe and beyond.

Romania won the case against Rosia Montana Gold Corporation, in which Gabriel Resources LTD (GBU.TO) demanded approximately USD 6.7 billion in compensation, according to the decision of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Center for the Settlement of Disputes Related to Investments, Lobby Romania reports.

Gabriel Resources invested EUR 900 million and demanded compensation of EUR 6.7 billion because the project failed. The international arbitration action was initiated in 2015 against Romania by two foreign investors, Gabriel Resources Ltd. and Gabriel Resources (Jersey). It was based on the Agreements regarding the promotion and mutual guarantee of investments concluded by Romania with the Government of Canada (ratified by Law no. 356/2009) and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (ratified by Law no. 109/1995).

The decision was initially announced on Friday evening by Prime Minister Ciolacu, after weeks in which signals were sent from the Government that Romania could lose the trial and be forced to pay huge penalties.

Romania was represented in this process by the Romanian law firm Leaua Damcali Deaconu Paunescu – LDDP and the Swiss firm LALIVE SA.

According to the document through which the decision was communicated, the decision was taken by the majority, and it also establishes a series of damages compensations that the Gabriel Resources company will have to pay to Romania, sums of money related to court costs. It is about EUR 1.1 million, RON 30.3 million and USD 0.928 million.

The Romanian Parliament has recently approved a measure prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, applicable both in physical stores and online. This legislation encompasses electronic devices designed for tobacco heating and disposable or refillable/rechargeable vaping products.

Violations of this law could result in penalties for retailers up to RON 100,000 (approximately EUR 20,000). Moreover, operators and owners of vending machines and proprietors of the premises hosting these machines face potential fines for non-compliance.

The law explicitly forbids the vending machine distribution of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, e-cigarette refill bottles, and tobacco heating devices. It also outlaws selling these items to anyone under 18 years old, as detailed in the legislative text passed by the deputies.

In addition to these measures, the legislation also targets the sale of energy drinks to minors and imposes new regulations on courier services. These stipulations require packages containing tobacco or nicotine products to display a warning label indicating the contents and the necessity of age verification upon delivery.

The legislation further mandates that smoking, including conventional and electronic cigarettes, be banned within educational institutions. Schools must implement specific policies to enforce this rule, with the Ministry of Education playing a pivotal role in defining penalties for violations.

This comprehensive law has been forwarded to President Klaus Iohannis for official promulgation.

The Clujana Company has pulled the plug on its operation after 111 years on the market. The business started out as a factory in Cluj in 1911 and eventually grew to become one of the national symbols companies of Romania. Clujana was the largest leather and shoe manufacturing factory in the country.

Given that the business has previously been just one step away from collapse, the chances don’t look good for it. The Cluj County Council is the owner of the plant, and it also holds 93,4412% of Clujana’s shares.

The company went bankrupt, but for the previous 30 years, the county institution has been unable to identify the best options for its rehabilitation. It has a detrimental affect. The current market in Romania provides the best conditions for international businesses and investors, but it is not the same environment for domestic businesses. One such instance is the Clujana plant, a historically significant factory with 100% Romanian capital that is on the verge of failure.

ValahiaNews offers us some insight on the Cluj County Council public statements.

“We are not the factory owners. During that privatization, I received some shares of Clujana from Fondul Proprietatea in custody. We are not majority shareholders, we are practically not owners, the State as a whole is a shareholder. Basically, the State through the Ministry of public Finance is a shareholder, we only have the right own the buildings, the factory itself remained a private one, it functioned according to the rules of the market economy”.
Alin Tise, President of Cluj County Council

Any assertions that it had to do with individual real estate interests in the structure and surrounding land of the Clujana plant were rejected by him. In addition, he opposed the factory’s privatization, arguing that only the name of the business could be purchased because the Cluj County Council owned the land, the building, and all other tangible assets.

The situation is gloomy and the reasons for the company’s inactivity have not yet been fully revealed, but there is still hope for the company’s revival if the necessary improvements, investments, and downsizing are made in accordance with the current financial challenges, debt, and the industry’s activity situation.

Giorgia Meloni is the leader of the right-wing, national-conservative political party in Italy known as Fratelli d’Italia. Previously, in 2020, she was also elected president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECRP), formerly known as the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe (AECR/ACRE). She is anticipated to become Italy’s first female prime minister after her party wins the most votes in the general election in Italy in 2022.

Fratelli d’Italia: History

The crucial underlying elements of the rise of the Fratelli d’Italia (FDL) Party don’t end at this point. The People of Freedom Party (PDL), led by Silvio Berlusconi, was created in 1995 by the hardline National Alliance, from which Giorgia Meloni and the other party leaders emerged. The FDL party, which is currently one of the most right-wing-led since 1945 and symbolized by a tricolour flame, was created due to a right-wing split within the PDL party.

Fratelli d’Italia in Romania: Starting conversations with the parties in the Romanian Parliament

In terms of right-wing politics, FDL is not only gaining support in Italy but is also beginning to spread to other European countries. Pasquale Elicona took his duty seriously and hopes to be elected to the Romanian Parliament in 2024 as president of the FDL affiliate in the Romanian Government, as reported by Defapt.ro . AUR, the Romanian nationalists, who are now exceeding 25% popularity and voting intention in Romania, is one of the Romanian Parties considered for potential assistance or cooperation.

Underlying scope of FDL

Elicona is a successful businessman and the director of numerous recruitment firms that send Italian workers to Romania outside of his political obligations and ties. By gathering votes from the Italians scattered around the nation and intending to support and give a voice to the minorities and especially the Italian community, his objective is to increase the party’s participation in all county and municipal elections in Romania.

Source: Defapt.ro

With many subconscious nationalist trends in the current parties, the Romanian parliament is rather hospitable to right-wing politics. Eduard Hellvig, the head of Romania’s secret services, has made several announcements about various references to such right-leaning mentalities:

”The demand for nationalism in Romania is great”
President of the Romanian Secret Services

FDL from a wider European perspective

Right-wing politics are present and steadily gaining appeal outside of Romania. There are nations like France, Hungary, and Sweden where right-wing parties are founded and have already begun negotiations with the EU, regardless of the sort of nationalism.

FDL vs EU sentiments

The European Union is entering a condition of preparedness and restlessness due to these political occurrences and shifts because it is unclear what political philosophies the nationalist parties would follow. This is because prior events demonstrated that right-wing and nationalist political parties, like Meloni’s FDL, frequently oppose EU legislation and raise objections to its rules and regulations.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has not yet publicly commented on the current developments. She just added:

”If the relationship deteriorated, the EU had resources to handle crises of this nature”
Ursula von der Leyen

This can only imply that Italy will be subject to the same sanctions as the other nations who have previously contested the EU. The political landscape is evolving globally, and the EU is ready to handle any eventuality.

Will Italy leave the European Union? No one can predict which country will remain in the EU because the national political landscape is shifting, and Euro-skeptics are gaining power.
